Hello friends, and welcome to Hog TV. I'm your host, Bushido. Black Desert Online has a great deal of paths for your character to go down, and today I will be going over one of the ones that I have chosen, horse catching and breeding. It is a semi-complex subject for beginners so strap in as I tell you all you need to know about getting your first horse, to breeding, and getting higher tier horses.
- Getting Started
I'm going to go under the assumption that you have the standard addition of the game like me and not the pre-order or the Explorer's Package, which give you a free higher tier horse. To start off, you're going to want to get to level 10, take the Dark Spirit's quest labeled 'Ah, these goblins!'. You'll go to a goblin camp, slay some goblins, break some faces, raze some buildings, all while completing dark spirit quests. He'll eventually give you a quest to summon your second boss via scroll. Do this, go back to Veila, and get your very first mount. A prestigious donkey with a base movement speed slower than sprinting. YAY! Useless you say? NOPE!
You ride this little ass up until it's level 7, which will coincidentally put you at training level 5, the minimum level requirement to tame your very first stallion or mare.
- Gearing Up and Preparing
Now that you're training level 5 it's time to gear up. Go to a stable master in any town or city, Heidel or Veilla is what I would recommend, and buy 15-20 rope. I personally would recommend 20 for your first horse, to be safe. It's up to you if you want to add sugar cubes to your gear. I personally don't use them very often, however they are very helpful for taming your first horse, and I used them on my first few. Here's how you make them
You'll need to buy a residence in either Veila or Heidel. Next, click on the NPC finder next to your minimap and click cooking. You will now have a path to a nearby cooking NPC. Open trade with them and buy the following: 40 raw sugar [DO NOT BUY SUGAR. It won't work!] and four waters. This well give you 4 sugar lumps. Yum!
- Taming
Now it's time for the hardest part of horse taming. Finding a horse. There are horse maps that you can find on google, however many of them haven't served me well. There is too much conflicting information out there because of Korean and Russian versions of the game.
This is a good area to start. The horses WILL respawn, and you WILL find one. This is where it's time to exercise a little patience.
Now that we found a wild horse, we have some rope, and we have some sugar. I know what you're saying. WATDO? I'll tell ya. We're going to want to use our rope, and be patient. If you get too close to the horse, it'll run away. If that happens, STOP. Wait for the horse to stop freaking out, as lassoing it while it's running away is very difficult. You'll want to keep your cross-hair on the horse. You'll know your'e in range when there's a red cross-hair on the horses body. Lasso that big boy up. Now you're playing a mini-game to catch the horse.
Walk towards the horse with W. Whenever the horse whinneys and hops up on his hind legs, spam the space bar. There will be a timer showing how long you need to do this. When he's done flipping shit, proceed to move forward again. This will continue until you finally reach the horse. Don't jump the gun. Wait for a moment. If you chose to get sugar lumps, hit F1, and then right click the lumps to feed the horse. I would try two lumps for every attempt. If the horse kicks you in the face and runs away you failed to tame the horse. No worries. Try again.
If you are attempting to tame the horse without sugar, we need to do something slightly different. When you get to the horse, don't immediately press R to try to mount it. Get close the horse to where the option shows up, and then wait for a good 30-45 seconds. The game doesn't allow you to mount the horse immediately, if you try too quickly you'll get the message 'You tried to mount too quickly', or something to that effect, and the taming will fail. There's less chance of failure if you wait a small while.
Eventually you'll get on the horse. This means the horse has been tamed. Now it's time to walk back to the stable. You won't know the gender of your horse until after you name it, but that's alright. Name it something you like, you'll find that it's not that big of an issue. My friend has a female horse named Bob and it's actually pretty amusing. You'll notice on the way back to the stable the horse is actually a bit slower than the donkey. Don't freak out. You can't ride the horse to it's full speed until after you check it in to the stable master.
- Breeding
In order to be a successful breeder you'll need a few things. You'll need two tier two horses. Tier two horses are found in the wild, just like tier one horses. There's a very easy way to tell the difference. Tier one horses come in a variety of colors, and have a light muscle tone. Tier two horses come in one color, a milky turd brown. They also have highly defined muscles in their legs and chest. We want to go on a tier two horse catching spree until we have one male and one female Tier two horse.
Now we have a male and a female, you take them and mash em up until they pop out a small baby horse, right? Not yet, unfortunately. Now it's time to level up the horses. In order to get the best odds of getting a higher tier horse, I recommend using a breeding calculator. I'll leave a link in the description down below. For example, the best way to get a higher tier horse with two tier two horses is to level them up to 6 and 7. It doesn't matter if you amke the male of the female the level 7 horse. This provides a 38% chance of a male T3 horse, a 36% chance of a female T3 horse, and a 26% chance of a female T2 horse. This is good for a horse breeder, because the possibility of getting the ever-rare female is actually very high at this level range. If you get unlucky and get a T2 female again, don't remorse, it won't take long to grind it up to level 6 again and use the second seed of the T2 male.
Alternatively you could level both horses up to level 12 and breed them for a 27% chance of a T4 horse, which isn't that low. You also get a 40% chance of a T3 female and a 34% chance of a T3 male. That choice is yours. I personally went and leveled them both up to 12 my first time and got two T4 males, which actually kind of sucks, because I didn't have a high tier female to breed them with.
Let's talk about breed counters and death counters. When a horse 'dies' it doesn't actually go into the ground, it goes back to the stables. They'll have a death counter on them. The only thing the death counter does is decrease the effectiveness of your horse in breeding. On the link provided you can toy with the death tokens and see how much it impacts breeding. Death tokens make a massive difference at higher tier horses. Breeding counters are how many times that horse can breed. Female horses can only breed one time, and they are rare in the wild, making female horses extremely valuable, and extremely rare.
In my personal opinion you want to use the breeding calculator to stack the odds of getting a female horse in your favor as high as possible. You don't have to follow this guideline, it's just what I started doing. You can also sell your seeds on the stable market, however I wouldn't do this for females, because you own't get the foal. After you use the seeds, you can put the horses into exchange. You exchange two horses for another horse, with the same chance of offspring being the same as breeding. The only difference is you lose the two parents that you put into exchange for the new foal.
Another thing worth mentioning is higher tier females are still worth money if you choose to sell to players. There's an item at the pearl shop that resets the breed count of horses, and since females are so rare, there are people that will buy a seedless female so they can do this themselves. If you choose to go down this path, you'll be giving up the exchange that you can do with your female though, which is an unfortunate loss.
- Leveling
The only thing to touch up on is the way to level up your horses. There are a couple of methods. One method is to simply ride yours horses individually. There are a couple other things you can do as well. If you buy or make a saddle, this will make your horses move a bit faster. When they move faster, they level up faster. You can also buy a trainer's garb from the market, or get it for free from reward milestones for a high enough level in training. In my opinion it takes too long to get this garb from the milestone to be helpful, so I would recommend purchasing the garb if it's something you would like to have.
Another option of leveling up is to buy a wagon. Wagons can be purchased from the stable masters in large cities, and I would recommend buying the Farm Wagon. for 180k silver, you and done it's a bit faster to train two at the same time using a wagon as opposed to train two separately individually. Connecting one horse to the wagon gives it normal exp with no boost. However connecting two horses to the wagon gives it slightly more than 50% experience to each horse, giving it a slight net gain. This is also helpful if you're going to be at your computer, because you can incorporate trading into your horse training, because you have a wagon and make some decent cash. I'll be making a trading guide soon, and put the link in the description down below if that's something you;re interested in.
As you breed new horses your horses will gain different abilities. I wouldn't worry too much about horse abilities until you get up to the much higher tier horses, T5 or T6. The right abilities on these high tier horses will be extremely valuable, both monetarily and practically.
- Words of Wisdom
In order for your horse to gain experience you must travel a distance. You cannot auto run into a wall or in circles for experience. Daum has just added a new feature in the game called 'auto loop' where you can set a route up for your mount to run endlessly. You set up that loop by going to where you want the loop to start, holding down alt and clicking to where you want the horse to turn around, and right clicking where you want the horse to start again. The horse will proceed to run back and forth between this path. You will know you have done this properly when the path turns green instead of blue.
